Latin name: Myroxylon balsamum
Origin: Central and South America
Characteristics: Heartwood is reddish-brown in color and this was first introduced to the United States in flooring products. It is extremely hard and often has unique striped figuring. The cut veneer has a distinct aroma and the wood appears to be very resinous often producing a discoloration that goes away when it is left open to air out. Is not a true Mahogany species, although it closely mimics in color.
Use: Fine furniture and flooring.
