Myrtle Burl
Latin name: Umbellularia californica
Origin: Northwestern United States
Characteristics: Heartwood color is rich golden-brown to yellowish-green, ranging in hue from light to dark with a large proportion of paler sapwood. Myrtle Burl is often stained to enable both light sapwood and dark heartwood to be used. Traditionally Europe was the biggest market but production is limited. There has been some renewed interest in cluster burls cut from the trunk wood and they often have a very interesting grain movement. Also, has a distinctive odor.
Use: Architectural woodwork, fine furniture and dashboards.
