Plane Tree

Latin name: Platanus acerifolia

Origin: Europe

Characteristics: Heartwood is reddish-grey to pink-brown and takes on a more even color when steamed but color variations within a log are common.  True quarter sliced material has almost a “snakeskin” effect because of the “flecking” in the rays making the veneer very appealing. Sometimes found in burls and crotches but is very rare.

Use: Architectural woodwork and fine furniture.
